Choosing Commercial Credentials Without Creating a Dead End
Credential selection affects security, daily user experience, replacement cost, and the next system upgrade. Commercial buyers should evaluate the credential programme as a lifecycle decision rather than accepting whichever card happens to be quoted.
Define the risk and user groups
Public-facing common areas, staff entrances, restricted rooms, contractors, and high-turnover workforces do not necessarily need the same credential experience. Document the user groups and operational needs before selecting a technology.
Plan migration before construction
Many properties need old and new credentials to coexist during a phased rollout. Confirm whether the proposed readers and management platform support that transition, how credentials will be issued, and who owns the cutover plan. A flexible migration can prevent a future hardware replacement.
Compare the complete operating cost
Include credential issuance, replacements, printing or enrollment, subscriptions, mobile-device support, and administration time. A convenient option for one tenant group may add friction for another, so the selected mix should reflect how the property actually operates.
Questions for bidders
- Which credential technologies are supported now and during migration?
- Who enrolls, revokes, replaces, and audits credentials?
- Are any subscriptions required per user or credential?
- What fallback exists when a phone or credential is unavailable?
- Can the owner change credential strategy without replacing every reader?
The right answer is the one the property can administer consistently while meeting its actual security and tenant-experience requirements.
